Rainbow Trout Ranch offers the perfect mix of western along with modern day comforts
Escape the city life enjoy a taste of the Old West complete with cowboy songs, horses, fishing, riding in the ranch rodeo and even penning cattle
ANTONITO, CO, January 05, 2009 /Outdoors PR News/ -- For anyone wanting to escape the city life, or parents wanting to give their kids a taste of the Old West complete with cowboy songs, horses, fishing, riding in the ranch rodeo and even penning cattle,
Rainbow Trout Ranch offers the perfect mix of western along with modern day comforts.
Owner Doug Van Berkum shares that "most folks feel right at home here at the ranch. We have folks that come in as strangers and leave as friends planning their next year's vacation with us together. It is one of the great pleasures of the dude ranch industry."
Rainbow Trout Ranch is owned by Doug and Linda Van Berkum who run it with the help of son and daughter-in-law David and Jane. All of them are passionate about the western traditions of family and dude ranching. As Doug puts it "we invite you all into our ranch home and we know you will enjoy yourselves as an extended part of our family at Rainbow Trout Ranch." Indeed, many families have been coming for going on seventeen seasons and more begin the tradition each year. Doug notes that it is a true compliment to welcome young families where one of the parents came to the ranch as they were growing up and want to give their own children the same experience.
Rainbow Trout Ranch is located in the glorious Conejos River Valley high in the San Juan Mountains of southern Colorado at 9000 ft. The nearest towns are Antonito, CO to the east and Chama, NM to the southwest over the gorgeous Cumbres and La Manga Passes. American's highest and longest narrow gauge railroad runs between these two towns, offering ranch guests an opportunity for a fascinating day-trip. Another option includes rafting the Rio Grande out of Taos, NM. In addition, many guests fly into Albuquerque, NM and make the drive up to the ranch with a night or two in "the city different" of Santa Fe in order to explore the enchantment of northern New Mexico. They find that combining the magic of the southwest with the alpine Rocky Mountain splendor of the ranch is in fact two vacations in one.
Back at the ranch, there is a full range of outdoor activities as well as friendly hospitality, comfort and modern amenities such as the heated outdoor pool, hot tub and mouthwatering meals. Mornings and afternoons folks can choose from a variety of riding options for every level of rider. Guests are matched with their own ranch horse for their stay—and there is plenty of range from beginner to expert and everything in between. All-day rides and arena activities are also offered as well as the magnificent overnight ride up into the backcountry. They can also fish the Conejos River which runs right through the ranch and offers opportunity to anglers of every age and ability. The fishing in the general area is also excellent and because it is a lesser known part of Colorado, the rivers and streams are not crowded. And needless to say, the scenery is spectacular for hiking and just enjoying.
For the younger cowboys and cowgirls, there are the wonderful kids' and teen programs which include a variety of ranch activities. All programs are optional but they are very popular and the counselors bring the old west to life along with good old fashioned fun. Families are able to go their different ways and yet spend plenty of time together reconnecting and renewing.
Evenings bring cookouts, dances, singalongs and hayrides. Or perhaps a quiet relaxing on the porch of your own log-cabin, far away from the bustle of everyday life. The stars are the brightest you'll ever see and if there is a full moon, you'll understand why they were able to rustle cattle in the old west simply by the light of the moon...
In a world dominated by fast paced living, the cowboy ways are very much alive in this tucked away corner of Colorado. Although Rainbow Trout Ranch pride themselves on offering true summer family vacations, it is also great for couples, singles, groups and anyone wishing to get away for a while. September particularly is "adults only" time although any time is a great time to be at the ranch. As Doug says, "You have a unique opportunity to enjoy friendly hospitality, good food, great outdoor activities, magnificent natural beauty and even learn a cowboy skill or two while you are at it.
It is a truly multi-generational adventure vacation with some good old western values on the side."
