Budget Shutdown Avoided, but Parks are Still in Danger
The budget shutdown has been avoided, but that doesn't make it easier for state parks as the chance of future cutbacks still looms ahead. State parks require a lot of upkeep, and without the necessary funding, they may fall by the wayside.
LEXINGTON, VA, May 25, 2011 /Outdoors PR News/ -- Recently, Congress met in an emergency meeting to discuss the fate of government spending and was on the verge of cutting off funding to many national agencies and the ramifications of such a decision would have had a major impact on day to day life for many Americans.
Though the situation was avoided, we are not out of the dark yet. A temporary solution was decided upon, and that means that there is still a fear of major government cutbacks to come in the future. The budget shutdown spared $32 million in daily spending on United States parks and saved national parks, seashores, and historic sites from being closed down, turning away around 800,000 visitors a day.
Not since 1995 has there been such fear for the security of our parks. David Barna, a spokesman for the National Parks Service said, "These parks are the economic engines of some communities." He also added that, "They're often the largest employer in an area," supplying jobs to restaurants, hotels, museums and shops, naming just a few.
The effects would continue to spread as well, affecting landscaping companies and manufacturers of park equipment such as ParkNPool, located in Lexington, Virginia. Selling picnic tables, benches, bleachers and assorted other outdoor equipment, ParkNPool, and companies like it would take a huge hit as well if the shutdown were to take place, and the results would be the same if the budget crisis isn't taken care of.
The ripple effect would spread throughout many different companies and industries, making it even tougher to get by in the already struggling economic predicament we find ourselves in now. If the parks take such a big hit, then the damage would spread to many other industries, taking its toll on the local and nationwide economy in the process.
The parks are just one of many industries that would have been effected, and though we shutdown was temporarily put off, if things are not done soon, we will likely still see the ramifications of such a decision envelop countless businesses and industries in its wake.
